Sort Lines

Sort lines alphabetically, numerically or by length, or shuffle them randomly.

How to use it

  1. Paste your lines into the box, one item per line.
  2. Click the sort you want, for example A to Z.
  3. Copy the sorted result.

How it works and why it matters

The Sort Lines tool arranges your list alphabetically (A to Z or Z to A), numerically, by length, in reverse order, or in random order. It is handy for organising keyword lists, names, reading lists and code imports. Alphabetical sorting ignores capital letters, so 'apple' and 'Banana' end up in the expected order.

Questions

Does sorting ignore capital letters?

Yes. A to Z sorting treats 'apple' and 'Apple' as the same letter, so the order looks the way people expect.

What does 'Numbers' sorting do with text?

Lines that start with a number are sorted by that number. Lines without a leading number are treated as zero.

Can I keep empty lines?

Yes. Untick 'Remove empty lines' if you want to keep them.
