Character Counter
Count characters and check them against common limits for X posts, SEO meta tags, SMS and Instagram captions.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text.
- Choose the platform or field you are writing for from the dropdown.
- Check the status line. Green means it fits; red means you need to shorten it.
How it works and why it matters
Many platforms limit how long your text can be. X (formerly Twitter) posts are limited to 280 characters, SMS messages are usually 160, and search engines show roughly the first 60 characters of a page title and about 160 characters of a meta description. This tool counts characters, shows how many you have left and reports UTF-8 bytes, which matter for some systems.

Questions
What is the character limit for a meta description?
Google usually displays about 150 to 160 characters of a meta description, but the exact cut-off depends on the characters used. Keeping it under about 160 is a safe target.
Why does the byte count differ from the character count?
Characters outside basic English, such as emojis or accented letters, take more than one byte in UTF-8. Some systems limit bytes rather than characters.
Do spaces count toward the limit?
On most platforms, yes. The 'Without spaces' figure is there for cases where they do not.
